Prospective study
Scoliosis > 40°

The replacement of the plaster cast by the polycarbonate was initiated in 2004 by the ISICO team in Milan with the Sforzesco brace. This symmetrical brace has proven its effectiveness for scoliosis of more than 45°.
In 2013, advances in CAD / CAM software made it possible to create a "digital cast" using the Katerina Schroth’s’ block correction principles. The ARTbrace is the asymmetrical brace that results from this digital cast.
Digital cast and ARTbrace replaced the EDF plaster cast and the old Lyon brace in May 2013 and a prospective study started on that date.

The acronym ART (Asymmetric, Rigid, Torsion) was created by Stefano Negrini, the inventor of the Sforzesco brace.

DATE TITLE   ABSTRACT AUTHORS
19/11/2014 Prospective study and new concepts based on scoliosis detorsion of the first 225 early in-brace radiological results with the new Lyon brace:  ARTbrace. Scoliosis. 2014 Nov 19;9:19. doi: 10.1186/1748-7161-9-19. eCollection 2014. The in-brace immediate reduction is: 0.7, i.e. 40% better with the ARTbrace than with a plaster cast. The correction of flat back is 9° (from 18°.4 to 28°.5 kyphosis Cobb angle). The improved aesthetic appearance is equal for rib hump and ATR. de Mauroy JC, Lecante C, Barral F, Pourret S.
11/07/2015 Research quality in scoliosis conservative treatment: state of the art. Scoliosis. 2015; 10: 21. It is difficult to design strong studies in this field due to the long time needed for follow up and the challenge of recruiting patients and families willing to be involved in the decision process. Nevertheless, the main methodological errors are not related to the study design but rather on the way it is performed, which very frequently affects the reliability of results. The most common errors are: selection bias, with many studies including functional rather than a true structural scoliosis; inappropriate outcome measures, utilizing parameters not related to scoliosis progression or quality of life; inappropriate follow up, reporting only immediate results and not addressing end of growth results; an incorrect interpretation of findings, with an overestimation of results; and missing the evaluation of skeletal maturity, without which results cannot be considered stable. 11/08/2015 SOSORT Award Winner 2015: a multicentre study comparing the SPoRT and ART braceseffectiveness according to the SOSORT-SRS recommendations. Scoliosis. 2015 Aug 11;10:23. doi: 10.1186/s13013-015-0049-4. eCollection 2015. A group of consecutive patients with Cobb >40°, Risser 0-4, age >10 treated with the ART brace for 6 months were matched with a group of similar patients taken from a prospective database of patients treated with the Sforzesco brace. These two super-rigid braces showed similar short-term results, despite the better in-brace correction for lumbar curves shown by the ART brace.  Zaina F, de Mauroy JC, Donzelli S, Negrini S.
19/08/2015 The new Lyon ARTbrace versus the historical Lyon brace: a prospective case series of 148 consecutive scoliosis with short time results after 1 year compared with a historical retrospective case series of 100 consecutive scoliosis; SOSORT award 2015 winner. Scoliosis. 2015 Aug 19;10:26. doi: 10.1186/s13013-015-0047-6. eCollection 2015. This study demonstrates not only good results of the ARTbrace about immediate in-brace reducibility of scoliosis described in previous studies published by the same author, but this trend is maintained further at 6 months and at 1 year. So the new concepts and first results of ARTbrace, defined as a modified or “new” Lyon brace, confirm that it can completely replace the casting and old Lyon brace process. de Mauroy JC, Journe A, Gagliano F, Lecante C, Barral F, Pourret S.
04/08/2016 Physiotherapy scoliosis-specific exercises - a comprehensive review of seven major schools. Scoliosis Spinal Disord. 2016 Aug 4;11:20. doi: 10.1186/s13013-016-0076-9. eCollection 2016. The Lyon method traditionally combined PSSE with the Lyon brace and casting, and more recently has combined PSSE with bracing alone in the form of the new Lyon ARTbrace (Asymmetrical Rigid Torsion brace).  Berdishevsky H, Lebel VA, Bettany-Saltikov J, Rigo M, Lebel A, Hennes A, Romano M, Białek M, M'hango A, Betts T, de Mauroy JC, Durmala J.
